October Is Spec Season: Why Spring Stone Installs Get Decided Now | Daydream Stone Atelier

If you want quarry-direct stone on site for a spring install, the selection happens in October.

Every year around this time, architects and landscape architects in North Metro Atlanta start locking in material specifications for projects that break ground in spring. The ones who understand stone lead times make their selections now. The ones who do not end up with a summer install, a substitution, or both.

Stone Atelier by Daydream Design and Build sources and fabricates natural stone for architects, landscape architects, and builders working on high end residential projects. Here is the lead time reality and what we need from you to hit a spring date.

Work Backward from April

The simplest way to understand natural stone lead times is to start at the install date and work backward. For a project that breaks ground in April, the timeline looks like this.

April: Stone is on site and installation begins. March: Material clears freight and customs and is staged for delivery. February: Fabrication is complete and material is in transit. January: Cutting and finishing are underway and the 3D model is verified against shop drawings. December: Shop drawings are approved and the order is placed with the quarry. November: Sizes, finishes, edge profiles, and thickness are confirmed. October: Selection and specification.

That leaves October for the decision. Not January. Not after the holidays. October.

Why Natural Stone Takes Longer Than Pavers

Manufactured pavers are stocked. Someone picks a SKU, a truck shows up. Quarry-direct natural stone does not work that way. The material is extracted, cut to slab, cut to piece, and finished to specification — for your project, not for a warehouse. That process has real time in it, and the freight from Europe adds more.

The payoff is that what arrives is exactly what was drawn. Custom finish. Custom size. Custom thickness. Nothing approximated, nothing substituted because the yard did not have it.

What We Bring to Your Spec

Send us the drawings. We build a full 3D model of every piece before anything is cut — coping, treads, pavers, cladding, caps, surrounds. Corners and returns resolved in the model. We produce shop drawings for your review and approval so you see every dimension before fabrication starts.

Material arrives labeled by location and sequenced for the installation order. The mason works from a clear plan. Nobody is cutting pieces in the field to make something fit.

We carry beige and grey natural stone in architectural grade. Less than 0.45 percent absorption. Rated for pool decks, wet areas, freeze-thaw, and vertical cladding. Finishes include honed, bush-hammered, brushed, rock-face, split-face, and antiqued.

How to Start

Send the drawings and a short description of the project — location, scope, target install date. We will come back with a preliminary quote and the questions we need answered to finalize the specification. Once sizes, finishes, and thickness are confirmed, we issue shop drawings and a final quote that includes stone, freight, and handling.

If the project is in North Metro Atlanta, we are glad to meet on site with samples. If it is somewhere else in the Southeast, we work from drawings and ship samples.

The Natural Stone Institute publishes dimensional stone specification standards that we reference in our shop drawing process. If you are writing a spec and want to see how our material tests against those standards, ask and we will send the data.

October is the month. The drawings are ready. Send them.
