Short answer: Yes, you can use the same natural stone for your interior floors and your outdoor terrace, patio or pool deck. The stone, color and character stay the same. The only thing that changes is the surface finish. Interior stone gets a smoother finish that feels soft underfoot. Exterior stone gets a textured finish for grip when wet and durability in the weather.
At Stone Atelier, our natural stone studio in North Georgia, we supply stone in both finishes and cut it to size so the floor can run straight from the living room, through the glass, and out to the terrace.
What does “indoor-outdoor stone” mean?
Indoor-outdoor stone means using one natural stone across both spaces instead of switching materials at the door. Inside, it might be large-format floor tile in the living room and kitchen. Outside, the same stone becomes terrace paving, pool coping, step treads and risers.
When the floor doesn’t change at the threshold, the room and the terrace read as one space. The house feels bigger, and the view feels closer. It’s one of the strongest design moves you can make on a home with large sliding doors or window walls.
What’s the difference between interior and exterior stone?
It’s the same stone with a different finish. Here’s how they compare:
| Interior finish | Exterior finish | |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Smoother, honed look | Textured |
| Feel | Soft underfoot | More grip, especially when wet |
| Look | Clean and quiet | Slightly more natural texture |
| Built for | Living rooms, kitchens, entries | Terraces, patios, pool decks, steps |
| Color and character | Same stone | Same stone |
Side by side, the two finishes look like the same material, because they are. In hand, the difference is obvious. That’s why we always recommend seeing samples of both before you decide.
Why use the same stone inside and out?
- One continuous space. The floor runs through the glass without a visual break.
- A bigger-feeling home. Your eye reads the terrace as part of the room.
- One material story. Floors, steps, coping and paving all match.
- Simpler design decisions. One stone selection covers the whole project.
Where does it work best?
- Living rooms that open to a covered terrace
- Kitchens that open to an outdoor kitchen or dining area
- Entries and foyers that continue to a front walk or porch
- Pool houses that connect to the pool deck and coping
- Stairs and landings that step down from the house to the yard
How do steps, treads and transitions match?
The details make or break an indoor-outdoor floor. Step treads, risers, coping and paving need to line up with the interior tile layout so the joints carry through. We cut stone to size from the drawings, so treads, risers and large-format pieces arrive ready to set. Your installer sets stone instead of cutting it on site.
If you already have architectural drawings or a landscape plan, our design team can prepare shop drawings that lay out every piece before anything is cut.
What should you plan for in North Georgia?
North Georgia gets real winters, with freezing nights followed by warm days. Outdoor stone here needs to handle freeze and thaw cycles, summer heat and heavy rain. When we recommend an exterior stone, we look at density and how it performs in our climate, not just how it looks in a photo. Proper base preparation and drainage under the stone matter just as much as the stone itself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same natural stone indoors and outdoors?
Yes. The same stone can be used inside and outside. The interior pieces get a smoother finish and the exterior pieces get a textured finish for grip and weather.
Will the inside and outside stone look the same?
Yes. The color and character come from the stone itself, so they carry through. The finish changes the feel more than the look. Natural stone always has some variation from piece to piece, which is part of its character.
Is the exterior stone slippery?
The exterior finish is textured specifically to give more grip, especially when wet. That’s the main reason interior and exterior finishes are different.
What colors are available?
Our limestone collection includes beige and grey tones, and Stone Atelier carries other natural stone collections as well. The best way to choose is to see full-size samples in your own light.
Can you cut steps, treads and coping to match the floor?
Yes. We cut stone to size from your drawings, including step treads, risers, coping and large-format paving, so everything lines up from inside to out.
Do you only work with homeowners?
No. We work with homeowners, builders, interior designers, architects and landscape architects. You can use Stone Atelier for stone supply on a project someone else is building.
Can I see samples in person?
Yes. We provide samples of both the interior and exterior finishes and can set up an in-person visit in North Georgia. Holding the two finishes side by side is the fastest way to understand the difference.
See it and feel it in person
Photos only go so far. Hold the interior finish in one hand and the exterior finish in the other, and the idea makes sense right away.
