The concrete base itself must be properly engineered with reinforcements like rebar or fiber mesh. Furthermore, it often requires complex additions like vapor barriers below and topical waterproofing on top to even begin to manage moisture. All these steps are essentially fighting against the slab’s biggest weakness: it’s impermeable. Water inevitably finds a way to get trapped between the paver and the concrete, and with no path for escape, it can lead to failures in the bond or damage from frost heave. While ROMEX does offer a specific application system to securely bond pavers to a properly constructed concrete base, the fundamental challenge of sub-surface drainage persists. For this reason, the open-grade permeable base system is our overwhelmingly preferred method for outdoor living patios.
